Communal Living

You arrived at the conclusion that communal living is your way of life and you are willing to orient your entire life accordingly. You are able to love and form ties in non-traditional ways.

You are comfortable with sharing love, affection and physical touch. Friendships are of great significance to you and "being busy" is not a reason for you to neglect maintaining them. You expect connections between people to deepen to ultimately become family with all the expectations, care and support associated with biological family, including end of life needs. If you are a parent you anticipate great community support through co-parenting, home schooling and shared resources and responsibilities.

Health Conscience

You take good care of your body, heart and soul. You communicate well and with integrity. You are tolerant and non-judgmental.

You have a healthy sense of self and love yourself enough not to smoke or regularly use drugs, alcohol, caffeine or pharmaceuticals. You have a concept of nutrition and you are generally concerned with health subjects like chemicals, perfumes, toxins, genetic engineering, pesticides, wireless radiation, etc.

Food-Growing, alternative energy, permaculture

You want to live a harmonious lifestyle in pristine nature using resources and energy conscientiously. You desire to grow much of your food and to produce what you can from home.

You are very realistic and know that this lifestyle is not an easy one yet you are certain that this is the only way of life which works for you. You are comfortable with hard work and you are willing to make sacrifices in order to live the way you want. You understand the value of a locally produced and home cooked meal vs. one made by corporations with ingredients often shipped from thousands of miles away.

1. property purchase

We are currently in the process of acquiring property, located within a distance of about 2 1/2 driving hours north of San Francisco. This area is best suited to generate interest in our services and products due to it's high population of "holistic" type people. This is essential to avoid isolation and to aid economic feasibility. Of special concern in land selection are beauty, fertility, forestry, water management, neighbors and alternative energy potential.

2. development phase I

Creation of a basic infrastructure and the first stage of residential dwellings, a garden orchard and greenhouse, erection of the hall (key building of Alternia for dance, yoga, meditation and workshop activities), kitchen, bathrooms, dorms and basic communal housing areas and some yurts and detached buildings accommodating the needs of up to 50 residents.

Expect completion: winter 2010 (or sooner if grants and donations are received). The community focus will shift from "building mode" to living a more normal and quiet day to day lifestyle at the completion of this phase. Alternia s internal economy and some public programs will start operating and normal membership application will be accepted at that time.

3. Further developments

More housing, farm buildings, workshops, school, permanent gardens, orchards and greenhouses and alternative energy designs will be constructed in this phase to accommodate the needs of up to 200 residents. The buildings will be constructed in the order of importance utilizing local, natural building materials and styles as much as possible. Land care management, forestry, water and energy design and Permaculture principles will be of special concern.

4. creation of an eco-village

When the community is well established and functional the creation of teaching facilities will follow with the intention to draw income, to publicize our cause and to teach and offer what we can to make a difference in the world. We will be showcasing an exemplary lifestyle, teaching alternative ways and crafts, emphasizing sustainability, Permaculture and low carbon footprint. Our facilities will be available for hire for events and Alternia itself will organize festivals, programs and events, benefiting the public on a larger scale.

The land and buildings will be laid out to separate public and private areas so increased public activities and popularity shall never cut into resident's need for privacy, simplicity and serenity.

Most of all, we WILL live a DIGNIFIED and meaningful life in community governed by respect and love.
